I am fascinated by flea markets. Walking around to find doubles of seemingly unique, though often useless objects I have already purchased at another flea market, is not only an inquisitive activity for me but part of my working process. Engaging directly with these objects, manipulating them, juxtaposing them against each other or representing them in a new context is my method of work.

Born in 1951 in San Francisco, California, I began drawing and painting at the age of 27. I continued to create artwork as a hobby for 20 years during which time I owned and operated an insurance brokerage firm in San Francisco. I sold the firm in 1998 at age 47 after my home and art collection was destroyed by a fire. I then moved to Los Angeles in 2003 where I began my full time art career at the age of 52.

My paintings, predominantly of girls under water, and mostly self portraits, aim to arouse not just a sense of well being and pleasure, but suggesting notions of insecurity, fantasy and sexuality. The paintings are without a horizon line, so as not to have a reference of anything solid to draw perspectives upon – allowing the viewer to feel like they are under the water with the girl or acting as a voyeur from above.

”I want to make pieces that communicate stories. With the storytelling key elements. I like the human flaws and weaknesses. I need to see that in a character to believe in him, to care about him and to be interested in him. I’ve found an inspiring theme that also opens doors to other routes and motifs that share my thoughts with others – contributing to define the kind of artist I am today.”
